Isao Takahata, visionary Japanese director, screenwriter and producer best known for co-founding Studio Ghibli alongside partner Hayao Miyazaki, died on April 5 at the age of 82.

Through his career, Takahata received worldwide acclaim for his directorial work of anime films. Such films include Grave of the Fireflies (1988), Only Yesterday (1991), Pom Poko (2013), and others.

His last film as a director was The Tale of Princess Kaguya (2013), which was nominated for an Oscar for Best Animated Feature Film at the 87th Academy Awards.

Isao was reportedly suffering from lung cancer and passed away at a hospital in Tokyo.
